AEE is the file extension of the image editions made in the application Photos included in iOS devices, such as iPhone or iPad. It is used in iOS version 8 and later, as well as in OS X 10.10 and later. The AAE file is always accompanied by an original JPG image file to which the edits described in the AAE file have been applied.

Are AAE files binary?

No, AAE files are based on XML file format which is textual. AAE files could be opened and read in any text editor. But information about edits and effects/filters applied in AAE file is encoded and only could be read by Apple software.

What applications can I use to open AAE file?

AAE files are natively supported by iOS Photos, Mac Photos and iCloud applications. Windows OS does not support AAE files.
